Designer Debrah Block Krol of DBK Design Arts uses an unlucky break to create beautiful pieces that are given to celebrities.

Ruffled felted scarf given to Sarah Jessica Parker

Online PR News – 09-May-2012 –Artist Debrah Block Krol enjoyed a career as an interior designer and consultant at a green building company, but it wasn’t until a series of unfortunate accidents and surgeries that she found herself back to her first creative love of hands-on design, and then onto a road she never anticipated – creating unique accessories for some of Hollywood’s elite.

Block Krol, who now designs and fabricates elegant and contemporary scarves and jewelry from her home studio in Millburn, N.J., under the brand name dbk design arts, has had her designs in numerous galleries nationally, as well as in the Oscars and Golden Globes GBK celebrity gift lounges and exclusive celebrity gift bags.

That is a long way from the day in 2010 when she first set up a “studio” on her dining room table, following two painful surgeries that left her temporarily wheelchair-bound. “I wheeled myself to ‘work’ every day,” Block Krol recalls. “I had to be off my leg for two months, so I used the time in bed to blind email galleries. I must have sent out over 400 emails.” That effort resulted in her acceptance into a number of galleries throughout the United States.

While her current lines include mesh jewelry, gemstone jewelry, hand knit items and hand dyed, felted cotton or wool and silk scarves, it is Krol’s background in painting and interior design, and her love of working with color and texture, that form the basis of her work. ”My training is as a painter, so I re-imagine painterly techniques in new ways,“ she says. “I now “paint” with mesh, silk, yarn, and other materials, to create elegant, edgy jewelry and accessories that delight and bring pleasure to the wearer.“

With that in mind, Block Krol recently created two special items to be gifted to Food Network star Giada De Laurentiis and renowned fashionista and actress Sarah Jessica Parker. The handcrafted gifts will be included in gift bags for the two stars, in association with the Artisan Group, an exclusive celebrity gifting organization of juried artists and designers.
For Giada De Laurentiis, Block Krol created a one-of-a-kind hand painted silk chiffon shawl, which she calls “Dogwood in Sun,” for the pale yellows and soft pinks that comprise it. She says “I think the beautiful soft colors of the scarf will complement Giada’s skin tone and feminine style.”

Meanwhile, Sarah Jessica Parker will receive a hand painted silk ruffled scarf hand felted with bamboo, baby alpaca, tussah silk, angelina and silk ribbon. “It is ultra-feminine and very stylized, and I designed it with her in mind,” says the designer.

Block Krol donated a similar scarf to a gala benefit auction for the renowned Papermill Playhouse in Millburn, NJ, along with a gemstone encrusted neckpiece. Additionally, her mesh triple drop earrings have been included in Mother’s Day gift bags to be given to new celebrity moms including Hilary Duff, Rebecca Gayheart, Keri Russell, Beyonce, Kourtney Kardashian, Lindsay Price, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jessica Alba, Uma Thurman, Alyson Hannigan, Molly Sims, Sienna Miller, Kristin Cavallari, Jessica Simpson, Bryce Dallas Howard, Evangeline Lilly, Jennifer Garner, Marley Shelton, Sarah Polley, Mrs. Jason Bateman (Amanda Anka), Mrs. Bruce Willis (Emma Heming), Susan Downey, Jr., Lisa Loeb, Mrs. Kelsey Grammer (Kayte Walsh), and Jessica Capshaw.

“I am thrilled at these wonderful opportunities,” Block Krol say. “But,” she adds, “In the end, it is about making beautiful things.”
